Force & Motion in the Primary Grades:
Go For It!!
  • Becky Hicks
  • Blanchard Elementary School
  • Cape Girardeau, MO
  • bshteach@charter.net
2
Force & Motion
  • Make the vocabulary very concrete
  • Bringing concepts down to their level
  • LOTS of hands-on activities
3
Vocabulary
  • Engage the students
    • Mystery Word
  • Make them think “outside the box”
    • Visualizing Vocabulary
  • Practice independently
    • Matching Game

    • Vocabulary can be fun!!
4
Key Concepts for
          Force & Motion
  • Gravity
  • Push & Pull
  • Friction
  • Force

5
Gravity
  • Identical balls
    • Make a prediction & test
  • Wadded up copy paper & a rock
    • Make a prediction & test

    • Short & simple – but makes a point!
6
Gravity – Real World Test
  • Paper Cup & Pencils
    • How to keep pencils in a
    •     paper cup from falling over?

    • Good way to challenge students to be innovative in solving a problem as they deal with the force of gravity!
7
Push & Pull
  • Define words
    • Use Dinah Zike’s foldable
8
Push & Pull
  • Label real world items as push or pull using post-it notes of two different colors.
    • Pink for push
    • Yellow for pull
  • Note some can be both pushed & pulled
  • Record findings in a T-chart or Venn diagram.

9
Understanding Friction
  • Need to make concrete
  • Dragon Racer
    • Fun
    • Very observable
    • Student’s actively involved in the learning process
10
Dragon Racer – Go For It!
11
Force
  • Need to understand – “What is force?”
  • Simple demonstration
    • What happens when you go from sitting to standing at your desk?
      • Force is what moves the chair!
    • Can you stand without exerting force?
      • Probably not!

12
Raceway to Science
  • A controlled force experiment
    • Shows how the amount of force exerted on an object makes a difference in its motion.

13
Simple Machines
  • In the primary grades
  •    only two simple machines
  •    are studied.
    • Lever
    • Inclined plane
14
Lever
  • What is a lever?
    • A bar that moves on a fixed point to move a weight with less effort.
      • Seesaw
      • Crowbar
15
Seesaw
  • By changing the position of the fulcrum, students see the change in force needed to lift the pennies.
16
Inclined Plane
  • What is an inclined plane?
    • A sloped surface that makes it easier to move a heavy load up or down.
      • Ramp

17
Rice Up!
  • Simple demonstration of how the inclined plane makes lifting easier.
    • Making a rubber band spring
    • scale makes it easy to measure.
18
Force & Motion Kit
  • Currently there is not a
  •    good primary kit to teach force
  •    and motion to meet GLEs.
  • Creating a kit can be done at a reasonable cost.
    •   Materials are easily available.

19
Kit Supplies continued….
  • Dominoes Identical small balls Post-it notes
  • Cups Cardstock paper Flat rulers
  • Pencils Spring clothespins Sandpaper
  • Marbles Aluminum foil Wax paper
  • Paper clips Rubber bands Rice
  • Copy paper Socks String
  • Identical toy cars Grooved rulers Washers
