- Benjamin Banneker was an excellent math student, learning more than his
teacher knew, so he had to challenge himself by writing his own math
problems.
- He also taught himself about clocks, astronomy, history and literature.

- Benjamin Banneker became the first clockmaker to make a clock in
America.
- This clock was carved with a pocket knife and worked for about 50 years.

- Benjamin Banneker taught himself about astronomy and was able to predict
tides, eclipses, sunrise & sunset.
- He wrote about these in an almanac he published.

- Benjamin Banneker was invited by Thomas Jefferson to survey the land
that eventually became Washington, D.C.

- As well as writing the almanac, Benjamin Banneker also wrote an
important letter to Thomas Jefferson asking him to end slavery.
- Thomas Jefferson wrote back, thanking Benjamin Banneker for his letter.
