Text Box: What is AAC?
AAC is a means of expression that enhances (augments) or replaces (alternative) conventional forms of expression.  It is a way to compensate for severe expressive communication disorders.  The modes of communication may be temporary or permanent and range from low assistance (communication boards, pictures, signing, etc.) to high assistance (synthesized speech, computerized communication systems, etc.).
 

 

 

 

 

Text Box: How are AAC methods selected?
 
A number of individuals may be involved in the selection of an AAC device, including the AAC user and family, speech-language pathologist, occupational therapist, physical therapist, and educator.  In some instances additional individuals are also involved. The student’s physical, cognitive, social, and vocational needs are considered in the evaluation process which may address desired outcomes, user motivation, mobility, understanding of language (oral and written) and its use, interaction patterns with different communication partners, communication skills needed to complete academic coursework, peer interaction, etc.

 

 

 

                                         

      

 

 

Text Box: How can I help a student who uses AAC?
 
Become familiar with the mode of communication your student is using.  Encourage communication between the student who uses the AAC system as well as the other students in the classroom. Some AAC users may be well-versed in the use of their AAC device, while others may not.  Keep in mind that for some students, finding the correct words to communicate is not where the difficulties is found, but rather, learning the correct use of language, especially social skills.
